City offers tendering tips to small businesses

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Management directorate is rolling out a third round of workshops on ‘How to tender’. These are aimed at empowering community-based suppliers with the necessary know-how for business opportunities with the City.
Over the next four months, community-based suppliers from various areas will have the opportunity to attend City-arranged workshops aimed at equipping community-based emerging businesses with the necessary tendering skills.
‘This is done in a workshop environment, where businesses get practical exposure in completing Request Forms for Quotations and Tenders.
‘As an opportunity city, we have created the Community Vendor Support Programme that will assist in creating opportunities for contractors in their own local communities or wards,’ said Alderman Grant Twigg, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management.
Participants will also be encouraged to register on the City’s Community Vendor Database for business opportunities to the maximum of R30 000.
Alderman Twigg said they continuously receive complaints from businesses about their inability to secure tender opportunities from the City, despite having submitted numerous applications.
The workshop will cover the following subjects:
How the City and government’s tender process works
Benefitting from the new Preferential Procurement Framework
Completing a tender document
Tender evaluation
Writing a winning tender
Practical application of pricing in respect of tenders and analysis of financial statements
A number of these workshops have already taken place during November 2019 in Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plan and Strand. These were well-attended.
‘The purpose of this workshop is to equip our community-based suppliers to be tender-ready, so they can be considered for business opportunities. We trust that this initiative will make a positive contribution to job creation and assist small emerging businesses to develop and gain experience so that they are equipped on all levels. They will then also be able to tender for larger projects one day,’ said Alderman Twigg.
